Content Editor Features
Selecting Cells
Click any content cell to select just that cell.
If any cells are already selected,
you may shift-click to extend the selection to include multiple cells.
Click and drag to select multiple cells in a rectangular area.
Press arrow keys or Tab to select the next cell up, down, left or right of the currently-selected cell.
Arrows keys only work when you are not editing cell content. If multiple cells are selected, keyboard commands operate on the top-left cell of the selection, and select only a single cell.
Using the Index Column
The leftmost column is the index column. It displays the number of its row, and the index or indexes of the card or cards that it generates. (Remember that, although most rows generate just one card, there are various ways that a row can "expand" to create multiple cards.) The index column does not contain card content, and cannot be edited.Click in the index column to make the main document window display the Layout panel in Preview mode, and show the first card that the clicked row generates.
If you are viewing a preview of a card while you edit its content, the preview will update automatically as you type so you can immediately see the changes you are making on the card.
Click and drag the index column of a row to change the order of the rows in your table. If your current selection covers multiple rows, dragging any of those rows will drag them all. If you have no selection, or you click and drag a row that has no selected cells, only that row will move.
Right-click or control-click an index cell to reveal a popup menu of row commands.
The commands are:
- Add Row Above - Insert a new, empty row above this row.
- Add Row Below - Insert a new, empty row below this row.
- Duplicate Row - Insert a new row below this row, with the same content.
- Delete Row - Delete this row completely.
- Fit Height to Content - Adjust the row height so that all text is visible.
- Use Default Height - Return the row height to the standard "one line" size.
Using the Title Row
The topmost row is the title row, where you enter the titles of your columns.Click and drag the title of a column to change the order of the columns in your table.
Right-click or control-click a column title to reveal a popup menu of column commands.
The commands are:
- Add Column Before - Insert a new, empty column to the left of this one.
- Add Column After - Insert a new, empty column to the right of this one.
- Sort Rows - Sort all rows by the values in this column, either alphabetically, numerically, or by cell background color.
- Delete Column - Delete this column completely.
- Fit Width to Content - Adjust the column width so that all text is visible.
The Cell Contextual Menu
Right-click or control-click a content cell to reveal a popup menu of column commands.
The commands are:
- Copy Down - The value in this cell will be copied into cells below in the same column.
- Copy Right - The value in this cell will be copied into cells to the right in the same row.
- Increment Down - If this cell contains a number, cells below will be filled with increasing numbers.
- Increment Right - If this cell contains a number, cells to the right will be filled with increasing numbers.
- Fit Height to Content - Adjust the row height so that all text is visible.
- Use Default Height - Return the row height to the standard "one line" size.
Note: The Copy and Increment commands will affect all cells in the indicated direction, if only one cell is selected. If multiple cells are selected, only those cells can be affected.
Copying and Pasting Cells
Select one or more cells, then select Edit > Copy (or type ⌘-C) to copy their content. Then select another cell or range of cells, and select Edit > Paste (or type ⌘-V) to replace the selected cell(s) content with the copied content.
If the selected cell area for pasting is smaller (in any dimension) than the pasted content, the selection is ignored and all cells needed to hold the pasted content will be changed.
If the selected cell area for pasting is larger (in any dimension) than the pasted content, only selected cells are affected, and the pasted content is "tiled" into the selected area.
For example, if you select and copy a single cell, then select multiple cells and paste, every selected cell's text will be replaced with the text from the copied cell.
The Editor Toolbar
At the top of the CE window there are four toolbars, similar in appearance to the main document window's Effects Toolbars. The topmost of these is the Editor toolbar. The functions in this toolbar affect the content editor itself.
The functions are:
- Background Color - Select one or more cells, then click the color control or use the popup menu button to select a color. All selected cells will use this as their background color. (This does not affect your card content or your cards' appearance in any way.)
- Text Color - This works the same as the Background Color controls, but changes the color of the text in the selected cells.
- Row Heights - Click to toggle the heights of all rows between the standard "one-line" height, and the Fit Height to Content size.
- Font - Click to select the font, font size, and style for content in the CE. (This does not affect your card content or your cards' appearance in any way.)
- Track with Preview - Select this checkbox to make the main document window display the Layout panel in Preview mode, and automatically show the first card that the selected row generates. The Preview display will update automatically whenever the cell selection changes.
- Sort - Click to open the Sort Panel. You may sort all rows or only selected rows, with a variety of options. You may select up to three columns for sub-sorting.
- Table Size - Click to change the number of rows and/or columns in the table. Important: Changing the table size can affect your content, if you reduce the number of rows or columns and thus delete some of your content. But you can always undo the change if you decide you've made a mistake.
